Silent Night
"Silent Night," a Christmas favorite, is introduced in an unexpected minor tonality by the piano in rising repetitive sixteenth notes, symbolizing the rising and falling motion of Mary's travail. A Soprano soloist sings the first verse with my original minor music, and is joined by various SATB, piano and violin ensembles, weaving both minor and major melodies together, as well as creating a beautiful descant. The piece ends with a serene tag, "Sleep in heavenly peace."

Verse one
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Verse two
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born
Verse three
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light,
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
