Thrust in Your Sickle
"'Thrust in Your Sickle' encourages us to join in the work of salvation, lest we 'return with empty hands.' Autumn is one of my favorite times of year. There is in the air a feeling of change. A last chance to gather in all of the summer's good intentions and hunker down for the coming blast of winter. It makes sense that the harvest would be associated with missionary work--gathering in the children of God so they are not forgotten" (Toni Thomas). "For behold the field is white already to harvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul; and faith, hope, charity, and love, with an eye single tgo the glory of God, qualify him for the work" (D&C 4:4-5).
Lyrics
Text: Toni Thomas Music: Diane Tuiofu
Verse one
The sun is low,
The storm clouds grow
Hear the mighty trumpet sound.
The Lord has called
Unto His fields:
Laborers for one final round
In the harvest of men's souls.
Chorus
Thrust in your sickle
With all your might,
With all your heart
With all your strength,
Open your mouth
With faith to believe,
And ye shall be laden
With sheaves.
Thrust in your sickle
With all your soul,
Fear not what men may say
For lo, God is with you, always.
Verse two
Behold the field
Lies full and white;
Now the wheat and tares are known.
Reap with the light—
Soon falls the night
When no more work can be done.
Bridge
Ye know not when
The summer shall be past;
When the labor has an end,
Will your harvest be made fast?
Or will you return
With empty hands?
With empty hands?
Repeat chorus
For lo, God is with you, always.
